Ilithenor

The elven lands to the east of the Valley of Baryn are known by their elvish name Ilithenor. This is a land of enchantment and magic, long having been populated by the elves and having benefited from ages of arcane cultivation and enlightened management.

Ilithenor is a land of rolling pastures of green and glorious woodlands. Even the hills of the land seem to have been sculpted to fit the elfin ideal. The waters of this land run clear and pure, sparkling with almost supernatural splendor. All across Ilithenor, the land seems to share the same fey attributes of its elf inhabitants.

Ilithenor is dotted with numerous villages and hamlets, usually built into and nestled among the picturesque woods that dot the countryside. True enough, these woods have been created for this very purpose, providing shelter and defense at the same time. These communities are usually made up of from 50-200 elves who live in homes built right out of the lofty trees forming graceful scalfolding and lattices of crossed walkways linking trees into a single community. Such townships are defended by militias of skilled elven warriors trained in bow and blade but most of their defense comes from Grove Gardians, ancient magical protectors. The rustic elves that inhabit these forests are known as Halthyr or High Elves, the most common sort of elf found in the Valley of Baryn.

Elsewhere in Ilithenor are the elven cities. These structures are home to the Elathyr, or Grey Elves. They are not as robust as their rustic kin and are more adept at courtly and scholarly pursuits. These cities are masteries of architecture, showing the elfin love of nature, even in their stone work. Tall towers with graceful balconies, arching walkways and curving staircases all convey a sense of being in the forest, even in the most urban of areas. Cities in Ilithenor can hold tens of thousands of elves and often have districts devoted to catering to other races visiting or in residence.

The elves of Ilithenor are friendly though aloof, often being mistaken for a rude and unfeeling people by those unused to their detached emotons. They treat strangers with trust until proven otherwise but do hold their secrets dear and close, not revealing them to any but their most trusted friends. Despite all this, elves are friendly with men and dwarves and engage in regular trade. In the Valley of Baryn the folk of the Shire of Vale hold the elves as kin and include them regularly in their Wintermeet celebration.

Relations with other human nations are carried out in the port cities to Ilithenor’s south. Humans from west and east keep regular trouding houses here and bring in spices, foods and woods from beyond the elfin kingdom and return to their homes with ships laden with fine elvish goods. Ralencia is known to conduct trade for elfin steel, using the fine metal to craft their graceful lanciastratas or “dancing blades”. The kings and queens of Aesland trade for elfin steel which they use to etch the runes of the magical swords, famous for the songs they sing when wielded.

To the east the elves ship spices, oils, scents and some rare magical materials that they only know the how to make. In the eastern lands, these luxuries are used in the decadant courts of the Sha’kai and their pampered nobles. What these elves get from these people are other exotic goods and luxuries as well as finely-crafted textiles and animals for consumption and to keep as pets. It is not ucommon to find Grey Elves in the company of these exotic beasts especially cats, birds, and monkyes.
